Calls for multi-layered security, tech surveillance, coordinated deployment and strict weather-based regulation of pilgrim movement.

New Delhi, June 12: Union Home Minister Amit Shah on Friday directed security agencies to adopt a technology-backed approach for safeguarding this year’s Amarnath Yatra, stressing coordinated efforts to ensure the annual pilgrimage passes off peacefully and without disruption.

At a review meeting on the preparations for the yatra, scheduled from July 3 to August 28, Shah asked the Jammu and Kashmir Police, Central Armed Police Forces and other agencies to maintain close coordination and strengthen security arrangements across the pilgrimage route.

According to officials, the home minister emphasised the use of drones, CCTV cameras and advanced monitoring systems to improve surveillance and response capabilities during the pilgrimage.

He said senior officers of security forces should remain present at key camp locations during the yatra to supervise arrangements and address issues on the ground in real time.

Shah also reviewed preparations related to pilgrim facilities and directed authorities to ensure smooth registration, adequate accommodation, healthcare services and disaster management measures.

The meeting was attended by Jammu and Kashmir Lieutenant Governor Manoj Sinha, National Security Adviser Ajit Doval, the Union Home Secretary, Army Chief, Intelligence Bureau Director, senior officials of the Ministry of Home Affairs, security agencies and the Jammu and Kashmir administration.

Officials informed the meeting that all local service providers and animals engaged in yatra-related activities would be registered and issued QR code-based identity cards. Veterinary and fitness assessment camps for animals have also been planned.

The home minister said movement of pilgrims should be regulated in line with weather forecasts and prevailing conditions to minimise risks.

He further directed authorities to maintain a strong security presence at major tourist destinations across Jammu and Kashmir, noting that many pilgrims combine the religious journey with visits to other places in the Union Territory.

The annual pilgrimage to the Amarnath cave shrine is one of the largest religious events in the country and draws thousands of devotees from across India every year.
