JKNC Files Writ Petition in Supreme Court Challenging Waqf Amendment Act
New Delhi, April 11: On the directions of Jammu and Kashmir National Conference (JKNC) President Dr. Farooq Abdullah, the party has moved the Supreme Court of India challenging the Waqf Amendment Act. The move comes in a bid to safeguard the rights and interests of minority communities across the country.
The petition was filed today by JKNC legislators Arjun Singh Raju, Advocate Reyaz Khan, and Hilal Ahmad Lone, who have urged the apex court to examine the constitutional validity of the amendments made to the Act.
Speaking on the development, a party spokesperson stated that the petition reflects JKNC’s commitment to uphold secularism and protect minority institutions from what it calls “arbitrary and unilateral interference.”
“The recent amendments undermine the autonomy and traditional structure of Waqf Boards, and pose a serious threat to the religious and cultural rights of minorities in India,” the spokesperson added.
The matter is expected to come up for hearing in the coming weeks. (PTK)
