Election Commission Imposes Ban On Exit Polls Ahead Of Elections
Ahead of the Lok Sabha and State Assembly polls, the Election Commission has issued a notification prohibiting the conduct, publication, or publicizing of exit polls from 7.00 am on April 19 to 6.30 pm on June 1.
The directive, outlined by the Election Commission, aims to uphold the integrity of the electoral process and prevent the premature dissemination of polling data that could influence voter behavior. Under the provisions of the Representation of the People Act, any display of election-related content, including the results of opinion polls or surveys, on electronic media is strictly prohibited during the 48-hour period leading up to the conclusion of the polls.
With the Lok Sabha elections and Assembly polls in Andhra Pradesh, Arunachal Pradesh, Odisha, and Sikkim on the horizon, the ban on exit polls is paramount in maintaining fairness and transparency in the electoral process.
Additionally, the notification underscores that bye-elections to 25 Assembly constituencies across 12 States will also be subject to the ban on exit polls during this period.
The Election Commission’s decision underscores its commitment to ensuring a level playing field for all political parties and candidates, fostering an environment where voters can make informed decisions without external influences. By enforcing this ban, the Election Commission reinforces the sanctity of the electoral process, safeguarding its integrity and credibility.
