Anantnag-Rajouri Parliamentary Elections: Candidates, Assets, And Political Dynamics

In the lead-up to the Anantnag-Rajouri Parliamentary constituency elections, a diverse array of candidates have thrown their hats into the political ring, setting the stage for a compelling electoral contest. Among the notable contenders are Mehbooba Mufti of the People’s Democratic Party (PDP) and Mian Altaf Ahmad representing the National Conference (NC).

The Election Commission of India reports that a total of 25 candidates have submitted their nomination papers, marking the culmination of the filing period. Scrutiny of these nominations is scheduled for Saturday, with the deadline for withdrawal set for April 22.

The absence of a Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) candidate in the fray has drawn attention, with speculation rife regarding potential support for Apni Party (AP) candidate Zaffar Manhas from the BJP camp. Meanwhile, the Democratic Progressive Azad Party (DPAP) initially nominated Ghulam Nabi Azad but later pivoted to field Advocate Saleem Parray as its candidate.

The electoral dynamics of the Anantnag-Rajouri constituency, comprising 18 Assembly segments, promise a compelling showdown. With a substantial electorate of 1,925,450 votes, the region holds significance, particularly with its representation from South Kashmir and Rajouri-Poonch districts.

Financial disclosures from key candidates shed light on their assets and income fluctuations. Mehbooba Mufti’s taxable income saw a significant decline following the abrogation of Article 370, subsequently rebounding in subsequent fiscal years. Mufti declared movable assets worth Rs 40,69,867 and immovable assets valued at Rs 35 lakhs.

In contrast, Mian Altaf Ahmad reported a decrease in taxable income post-Article 370 repeal, with a subsequent increase in recent fiscal years. Altaf disclosed movable assets totaling Rs 38 lakhs and immovable assets, including self-acquired and ancestral properties, amounting to a substantial Rs 17 crores.

As the electoral process unfolds, the electorate is urged to fulfill their civic duty by exercising their right to vote on May 7. With candidates showcasing diverse backgrounds, assets, and political affiliations, the Anantnag-Rajouri constituency braces itself for a pivotal chapter in its democratic journey.
