We need to talk about climate change: DDC Member Nasir Lone
Srinagar, Sep 28: Small efforts could have a big impact on climate change, said Nasir Lone, elected representative of the District Development Council (DDC) of Sogam in the Kupwara district of North Kashmir Kashmir. Having participated in the Net Zero Fellowship organized by the School of Policy and Governance recently, Lone’s main takeaway was that people were engaging in different kinds of work to tackle the climate change issue.

Speaking of environmental action, he said, “I always thought it was too small an effort. But these small efforts could lead to something big. They could help us reach our net zero goals.”
In his first year as a DDC member from Sogam, Lone installed solar street lights and spread awareness about rural waste management. He also aims to plant trees and start a conversation around climate change.
Born and brought up in Srinagar, Lone has a Master’s degree in Mass Communication and is associated with the social development organization Goonj. He worked in Istanbul for some time before moving back home.
Having returned, Lone observed that his hometown was getting warmer. “There has been a visible change in the last 15 years. When I was a child, we never had fans at home. Now it is so hot that we need an air-conditioner,” he said.
