Surprise! 57 percent J&K students who underwent NAS score less than 50%

Srinagar, Aug 29: In a surprising development, at least 57 percent of students of Jammu and Kashmir who have gone through the recent National Achievement Survey (NAS) have scored less than fifty percent.

According to the official documents reads, “Differences in the learning levels among the students of a same class have increased and 57 of the students have scored less than 50 percent in the Union Territory of Jammu and Kashmir.”

About the immediate measures that have been proposed to improve the outcomes include implementation of RTE-Act and making it compulsory to codify expected levels of learning which students in Classes I to VIII should achieve in different subjects.

“Converting every classroom into a smart classroom and to ensure that focus of teaching learning and assessment is shifted from content mastery to competency mastery as envisaged in NEP-2020,” it reads.

The documents also suggests that the training on latest pedagogies to support Classroom Transaction Based on Learning Outcomes and encouraging experiential learning. “Empowering and encouraging the teachers to design further plans, and to carry out assessment as per the competency to be assessed at school / classroom level.”

“Using the latest IT- tools and interventions to track, map and record the improvement in learning levels of each student,” reads the suggestions.

Earlier in June, KNO reported that in Jammu and Kashmir, the average performance of students has declined in a fresh assessment survey as compared to the National Achievement Survey (NAS) 2017.

Jammu and Kashmir State Council of Educational Research and Training (SCERT) has said that in comparison to NAS-2017, average performance of students has declined among the students of third standard, fifth standard and eighth standard—(KNO)
