Ganderbal, Apr 28 : The strategic 434Km Srinagar-Leh highway connecting Ladakh region with the rest of Jammu and Kashmir was officially re-opened for traffic on Sunday, said officials.

Hundreds of vehicles passes through the Zojila Pass which remains annually closed during the winter months as it receives heavy snowfall.

Vehicles were on Sunday allowed to move towards the Zojila Pass after the highway was thrown open after about five months. All essential supplies to Leh and Kargil districts of the cold, desert Ladakh region are routed through this highway.

The Srinagar Leh highway was thrown open by General Commanding Officer (GOC 15Corps) LT Gen JS Dhillion and flagged off the first convoy of vehicles at Zero Point Zojila.

The inaugural function was also attended by officials from civil administration, including Chief Engineer Beacon, chief Engineer project Vijayak, DC Kargil, SP Kargil, ADC Ganderbal besides the other officials of administration. (KNS)
