Metrolite for Srinagar, Jammu; Proposal seeking PIB approval under process: Centre

Srinagar, Feb 01: The Government of India on Monday disclosed that a proposal seeking approval of the public investment board (PIB) for metrolite projects of Jammu & Srinagar is under process.

In a document titled implementation of budget announcements of 2021-22, the Union Finance Ministry revealed that the proposal seeking approval of PIB for these two projects is under process.

In 2021, the Jammu & Kashmir government had submitted the revised detailed project report (DPR) of metrolite rail for Srinagar and Jammu cities to the Ministry of Housing and Urban Affairs (MOHUA) for the approval and funding purposes.

The revised DPR was prepared after the Centre asked the J&K government to rework on the project and suggested some inputs which were to be incorporated in it.

In the last week of August 2021, Lieutenant Governor Manoj had Sinha said that the J&K administration was awaiting the union cabinet’s nod for the project. “We have submitted the proposal for the metro rail, and the Housing and Urban Development Ministry has circulated the cabinet note in this regard,” he had said.

The elevated metrolite has been proposed for Srinagar (25 km; Rs 5733 crore) and Jammu (23 km; Rs 4113 crore) to facilitate easy and quick movement of people in both the capitals.

The light rail transit system in Jammu will have its one corridor from Bantalab to Bari Brahmana with an entire length of 23 kilometres whereas in Srinagar it will have two corridors, the first one is from Indira Nagar to HMT Junction and the second is from Usmanabad to Hazuri Bagh, with an entire length of 25 kilometres—(KNO)
