Its snow everywhere in Kashmir, Valley cuts off from rest of the world
Srinagar, Jan 4: Kashmir Valley was cut off from the rest of world on Monday as both surface as well as aerial connectivity was disrupted due to massive snowfall which threw life out of gear.
Valley witnessed heavy snowfall both in plains as well as in upper reaches. Director Airport told KNT that not a single flight was able to take off or land at Srinagar International Airport due to snowfall.
An official from MeT Department said that Kashmir Valley recorded massive snowfall for the 2nd consecutive day on Monday. He said the snowfall began in the late afternoon on Sunday, continued across Valley till Monday afternoon, he said, adding it is one of the heaviest snowfalls in the recent years in the plains of Kashmir.
Srinagar recorded 7 inches of snowfall and the famous ski-resort of Gulmarg in North Kashmir recorded one foot of fresh snow. While Qazigund recorded 11 inches, Kokernag 8 inches, Pahalgam 17 inches and Kupwara 3 inches of snow, the officials said.
The higher reaches of the valley received heavy snowfall which has led to closure of Srinagar-Jammu National Highway and other road links. A traffic police official said that no vehicular movement shall be allowed on Jammu-Srinagar NHW from Jammu towards Srinagar and vice-versa in view of snow accumulation around the Jawahar Tunnel and inclement weather prediction issued by MeT department in J&K for next few days.
He said all important roads including Mughal road is blocked.
The snowfall also disrupted the air traffic to and from Srinagar international airport.
The snowfall has also disrupted normal life and affected the movement of people and transport in Srinagar city and other districts of the valley.
Most areas of have valley have been without electricity since last night. The Press Enclave Srinagar was also without electricity for the whole day on Monday. (KNT)
