Avalanche at Sonmarg, One dead, another missing
Ganderbal, Jan 12: An avalanche hit near Sarbal area close to Nilgrath where Hyderabad-based Megha Engineering & Infrastructure Limited (MEIL), is executing the work on Zojila Tunnel.
The snow avalanche hit the area at 10 AM on Thursday morning.
Project Manager, Megha Engineering & Infrastructure Limited, Harpal Singh told news agency Kashmir News Trust that a rescue operation is underway to find out if any labourer has been trapped under the snow or not.
Singh confirmed that a worker in critical condition has been taken out who was trapped under the snow. “We have shifted the labourer to PHC Sonmarg for treatment,” he said adding that there may be casualties but it will be premature to say anything at this point of time.
Meanwhile, official sources said that the body of a worker identified as Sandeep Singh son of Munshi Ram, a resident of Paddar Kishtwar was retrieved from the snow while another worker identified as Pal Krishan is still missing and efforts are on to retrieve him dead or alive.
Notably, Tehsildar Gund had already issued an advisory asking people not to roam in avalanche-prone areas. Local sources said that despite the advisory issued by Tehsildar Gund, the work on the Zojila Tunnel was going on as per routine.
SSP Ganderbal Nikhil Borkar said that so for a deed body has been recovered while the searches are on to locate the missing worker. [KNT]
